881. The first non-native speaker to read the UK TV news (with Barbara Serra)
Barbara Serra is an award-winning Italian journalist who has spent much of her career reading the news in the UK on various high-profile well-established English language news networks including the BBC, Channel 5, Al Jazeera English and Sky News.
Barbara has quite a specific relationship with English. It’s her dominant language but not her native language. She has a certain accent, which does place her outside the UK somehow.
So how has this affected her career as a news reader and reporter? What is the story of her English? What kind of challenges has she faced while reading the news in the UK? And what does this all tell us about learning English, what it means to improve your accent, the relationship between accent and identity, the definition of “native” and “non-native speaker”, the status of different English accents in the English speaking world?

    Luke, thank you very much for your podcast, I watch it periodically and I like it very much. I live in Russia, and this situation with the invasion in Ukraine and the whole war that is currently taking place in this region, of course, is concerning all of us. It's terrible, exhausting and unhuman action. We're all against this war , we're against putin and all what he's doing in the world. We're getting very scared for what this so-called politician is saying about the nuclear strike, about the invasion, about the war, about killing civilians and killing in general. Thank you for your words and your understanding of this tense situation. I want you to know that we against the war and it is very dangerous to have such opinion in Russia nowadays. I could go in prison for these words and all critiсism of russian system. Sorry for my poor English ..that's why I listen for your lessons.

    Hi, as a person with an accent struggling between 100 difrent accents in London I am not happy about this practice. I do try to sound understandable to others to make sure that my communication is smooth and nice rather then people ask me several times to repeat. Then I would deliberately not to watch or listen a program with that lady to learn wrong prounatoation form her and make my life harder. And if she really want to show people who she really is my advice is to do good journalism in a way that people will talk about her work rather then accent. Which is now a huge distraction from her work, gives her only free advertisment.

    • @LukesEnglishPodcast
      @LukesEnglishPodcast 17 годин тому

      She doesn’t have wrong pronunciation, she just has an accent that doesn’t sound completely British. Her message is that clarity is very important and this is what we should aim for. The rest is just a question of identity. Plus, we are talking about her accent and not her journalism, because this is a channel about learning English.
